Goolge PageRank. You may have heard about through the grape vine, or even have experienced the heartbreak of being rejected from a community or ad-campaign due to your page rank being too low. But what is PageRank anyway?
In the simplest terms, its how well your website is doing, exposure-wise. And as with everything on the internet, this is measured in how many times you've been linked to from other websites. This includes personal websites, professional websites, forums, twitter, and any adspace you have purchased. The more links you have on other peoples websites, the higher your PageRank will be.
There's a big fancy algorithm that is explained fully at the Google Page Rank Wiki, if you want to check it out.
So, how do you increase your rank? In theory, its easy. It is a very, very, very large amount of legwork though, so be prepared!
Create new, original content on a regular basis. This is the fastest way to draw in loyal fans, as well as bring in a wealth of new viewers. No one is going to continually check a website that never updates. If you can establish a regular schedule on which you update, at least a few times a week, you can guarantee a continuous and growing webflow. This will increase the likelyhood of you getting linked on other peoples websites, and a vital way to increase PageRank.
Join as many related web communities as you can, as soon as you get your website well-established. Forums, blogrolls, and web rings are a great way to get your name out there. This isn't the easiest thing to do, as many require you have an already established website and page rank. (The internet is not adverse to catch-22s.) Forums, however, do not. But for the love of all that is holy and pure, don't go on a forum just asking people to visit and link to your website! Most forums are quick to ban those who do it, and you could earn yourself a bad reputation.
Go out and get listed on search engines. This is almost always free, and the more effort you put into it, the better! Listing yourself on search engines such as Ask, Yahoo, Alta Vista and others will help you get good exposure to Google, as well as provide even more free links! This is a quick effort, and in order to make it even quicker, Submit Express has created the ability to mass-submit your website to most search engines in about 10 seconds.
I do suggest, however, that you use an email that you don't plan on using too much, they're a bit heavy on the newsletters if you know what I mean. (Still has to be a valid email though.) However, to list on Yahoo, Altavista, and a few others, you have to sign up with a yahoo account. It should also be noted that it takes a few weeks (often 2-3, but sometimes as much as 5-10) have your website crawled by their indexing spiders. You also need to make sure that you allow spider-bots to your website. Websites allow this by default, so as long as you haven't changed any options, you should be good.
When you update, make sure to publicly notify people. Using Twitter, Facebook, and Myspace status updates are a great way to notify people. Also, using a newsletter or (e-zine) is a great way to let your already loyal fans know what you've been up to. Also, if you're going to use twitter, you should really be using the hash-tag function! Since I started using #blog and #tutorial on the ends of my update related tweets, I get spikes of 50-100 viewers right off the bat! This is a great way to draw in new viewers! Also worth having are RSS feeds. Joomla and Wordpress will automatically create RSS feeds of your mainpage, but there are ways to do it with traditional coding.
There are countless reasons to try to increase your Google PageRank, including high-rankings on all search engines, and the ability to become a part of higher ranking website communities and ad agencies. It is worth noting that working with some ad agencies has been known to decrease your Google PageRank over time. Normally, this happens if the sites themselves are not Google compliant. A bit of searching on the internet will be able to tell you if the ad agency you're looking at is a threat to PageRank.
